The short version
Contxt doesn't have accounts, logins, names, or email addresses. We identify a browser or extension install with a randomly generated device ID, not a person. We use what we collect to generate the briefs you ask for and to understand how the product is used — not to build an advertising profile, and not to sell to anyone.
What we collect
When you use contxt.news or the Contxt browser extension, we collect:
- A device ID. A random identifier generated the first time you visit or install, stored in your browser's local storage (or, for the extension, its own local storage). It isn't tied to your name, email, or any account, and it resets if you clear your browser data, use a different browser, or reinstall the extension.
- What you search for. The topics, questions, or links you ask Contxt to generate a brief for.
- Basic usage counts. How many briefs you've viewed, searches you've run, and shares you've made, so we can understand engagement.
- Technical data. Your IP address, a coarse device type (mobile or desktop), and — for regular web visits — the referring page and any campaign parameters in the link you followed, so we can tell which channels bring people to Contxt.
- Feedback you choose to give us. If you rate a brief or write in feedback, we store that text. Please don't include personal information in free-text feedback that you wouldn't want us to have.
The browser extension, specifically
The Contxt extension adds a small pill to the corner of the pages you visit. It only reads the current page — the URL, and for a short list of supported sites (Reddit, Instagram, X/Twitter) a small excerpt of the post text — when you click "Load brief for this page" or otherwise ask it to generate a brief. That page URL or excerpt is sent to Contxt's servers to generate the brief you requested, the same way a search on contxt.news would work.
The extension does not run in the background, does not log your general browsing history, and does not read or transmit anything from a page unless you've taken that action on it.
What we don't do
- We don't sell your data.
- We don't use advertising trackers, retargeting pixels, or third-party ad networks.
- We don't build cross-site advertising profiles.
- We don't require or collect your name, email, or any account information.
How we use it
We use the data above to generate the briefs you request, keep the product working, understand which parts of Contxt people actually use, and debug problems when they come up. Basic technical data (like referrers and campaign parameters) also helps us understand which channels — a shared link, a search, an ad — brought a visit to Contxt.
Sharing
We don't share or sell your data to third parties, except with the infrastructure providers that host Contxt's servers and database, who process it only on our behalf to keep the service running. Briefs link out to the original news sources and social posts they're built from — visiting those links is subject to that site's own privacy policy, not ours.
Web pages on Contxt load fonts from Google Fonts, which may receive your IP address as part of that request, subject to Google's privacy policy.
Your choices
Clearing your browser's local storage (or uninstalling the extension) resets your device ID, disconnecting your future activity from anything collected before. To ask us about or request deletion of data tied to a specific device ID, email us at [email protected].
Children's privacy
Contxt is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect data from them.
Changes to this policy
We'll update this page if what we collect or how we use it changes, and update the date at the top when we do.
